Sharing gene therapy knowledge and the ‘Molecule to Medicine’ journey, to celebrate science and inspire future generations

In 2016 we attended the British Science Festival in Swansea as a sponsor of the event, which is organised by the British Science Association (BSA).

Our participation focused on raising awareness of the work our scientists do in collaboration with other UK institutions, being involved in open discussions about issues that affect our culture and society and, finally, inspiring students and the general public to become involved in life sciences.

“Being here gives us a really nice way of engaging with the public, to show them the challenges and the opportunities that we have around making medicine”Don Clark, Chemistry and Spectroscopy Investigation Manager, Pfizer UK

Throughout the 4 day event, Pfizer colleagues presented the Darwin Award Lecture, provided a presentation and Q&A session on gene therapy, and ran an interactive exhibition stand, enabling the general public to participate in some live experiments.

Molecule to Medicine

Don Clark, who is part of the Materials Characterisation Team at Sandwich, explained the kind of science used in making a medicine, such as infrared technology and thermal imagery.

Throughout the week, at the Pfizer stand, visitors learnt about the 'Molecule to Medicine' journey and took part in some small demonstration experiments using thermal imaging cameras and spectroscopy analysis.

Sharing gene therapy knowledge

Pfizer scientists Dr Michael Linden* and Dr Nick Clarke presented on “The Forefront of Gene Therapy” explaining some of the inspirational work taking place in this area and how it can potentially impact drug discovery for rare diseases.

We hope that events like this help to inspire the next generation of life sciences experts, through sharing the challenges and opportunities developing new medicines bring, as we seek to improve the lives of patients across the UK and the globe.
