For UK consumer, trade, and medical media

Walton Oaks, 30 July 2026 – Pfizer Ltd announced today the opening of its new Internal Medicine Innovation Center (IMIC) at the London BioScience Innovation Centre (LBIC): Apex, part of the UK’s thriving Knowledge Quarter. The state-of-the-art facility will work to accelerate early-stage research into peptide-based medicines.

The centre builds on Pfizer’s acquisition of Metsera, bringing together UK scientists from this group with existing Pfizer researchers in one new location. The Internal Medicine Innovation Center (IMIC) will focus on the discovery and development of peptide-based therapeutics, contributing to Pfizer’s global pipeline of potential treatments for conditions such as obesity and cardiometabolic disease.

This investment reflects the UK’s strength in early-stage scientific research and builds on Pfizer’s continued scientific presence in the UK - investing over £2.9bn in research and development in the UK since 2016.

The site will be home to highly skilled scientists who have industry-leading expertise in peptide-based drug discovery and have contributed to the development of obesity medicines in Pfizer’s current pipeline.

In addition to serving as a Pfizer UK research hub, the IMIC will endeavour to strengthen Pfizer’s relationships with UK academic institutions, including ongoing partnerships with Imperial College London and the Medical Research Council’s Laboratory of Medical Sciences (MRC).

Jonathan Reynolds, Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade:
“The UK life sciences industry is driving growth, jobs, and opportunity across the country - attracting more than £3 billion in public-private investment over the first year of our Industrial Strategy.

"Investment in early-stage research keeps the UK at the forefront of innovation.

“Today's announcement from Pfizer is yet more evidence of our world-leading scientific expertise - putting brilliant British research at the heart of efforts to discover new treatments that will save and improve lives.”

Jim List, MD, PhD, Chief Internal Medicine Officer, Pfizer reiterated: "Obesity remains one of the most significant health challenges of our time, and Pfizer is committed to advancing the science needed to meet the diverse needs of people living with it. The new Internal Medicine Innovation Centre in London brings together some of our most talented researchers under one roof, with world-class capabilities in peptide discovery that strengthen our ability to investigate next-generation treatments.”

John McGinley, Country President and Managing Director, Pfizer UK commented: “Today’s announcement is an important milestone for Pfizer UK and is testament to the leading science that takes place here. As UK scientists work to develop potential medicines of the future, we're committed to working with Government to ensure UK patients can ultimately benefit from these advances."

Amanda Keightley-Pugh, Chief Commercial Officer, LBIC added: “We are delighted to welcome Pfizer's new Internal Medicine Innovation Center to LBIC: Apex. This investment is a strong endorsement of the UK's life sciences ecosystem and the collaborative environment we have built here within the Knowledge Quarter. By bringing together exceptional scientific talent and strengthening links with leading academic institutions, Pfizer's presence at LBIC will help foster innovation that has the potential to improve the lives of patients around the world. We look forward to supporting the team as they become part of our vibrant community."
