Developing Science Talent

At Pfizer, we want to inspire and grow the next generation of British scientists and business leaders.

We recognise the promise, passion and knowledge talented people bring and their potential to truly change the world by developing and delivering the medicines of tomorrow.

As one of the largest bio-pharmaceutical companies operating in the UK, we are committed to helping the UK develop the talent it needs to achieve the aspiration of being a global leader in life sciences, from the school classroom to PhDs.

Supporting Higher Education

In support of higher education institutions we seek out inspired new talent who share our core values and mission of making the world a healthier place. We look to leading academic institutions as an invaluable source of new hires that share our passion for healthcare and are ready to make contributions to the high science behind Pfizer medicines and improve UK health.

PhD Studentships

We are currently sponsoring 38 PhD studentships for the 2018/19 academic year, covering various areas of basic research from medicinal chemistry, through product design to advanced manufacturing.

Undergraduate Placements

Each year we recruit undergraduate degree students into our paid 12 month undergraduate placement scheme. As of January 2019, we had 94 undergraduates working across all of our UK business units, including our commercial and R&D businesses.

Apprenticeships

We also actively support the National Apprenticeship programme across many disciplines including science, engineering, administration and IT and, at present, have 51 apprentices across our Pfizer UK sites. Our apprentices have won the ‘2015 Science Industry Outstanding New Talent Award’ and ‘2016 Royal Society Chemistry Apprentice of the Year’ whilst we have been awarded the ‘Gold Employer Award’ from Apprenticeship4England in 2017.

The Apprenticeship scheme at Pfizer has given me an amazing opportunity to gain industry experience in a world class laboratory working with some incredibly talented scientists. It has allowed me to gain my academic qualifications whilst also learning and developing practical skills in an exciting and supportive workplace."

Inspiring Young People

Many Pfizer scientists are enrolled as STEM  (Science, Technology Engineering and Mathematics) ambassadors, a national programme aimed at inspiring young people in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. We have also been a member of the Science Industry Partnership (SIP) since its inception in 2012, where our SIP ambassadors encourage young people into careers within science. To support both of these programmes, we are involved in a number of initiatives to inspire young people including:

Developed by Pfizer employees from across the UK, our 'Science in a Box’ educational programme is available to primary and secondary schools.

Working alongside the PSHE Association and National Schools Partnership, 'Superbugs: Join the fight' is designed to help raise awareness of antibiotic resistance to school children.

The 'Community Lab' provides schools near Sandwich, Kent with access to an industrial-standard laboratory.

'Lab in a Box' enables schools in the surrounding areas of Sandwich, Kent, to borrow specialist science equipment.
