Pfizer UK’s ‘Science in a Box’ team wins Royal Society of Chemistry award

We’re delighted to announce that our ‘Science in a Box’ core team have been named the winner of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s (RSC) Inspiration and Industry Award.

The RSC’s annual Prizes and Awards aim to celebrate the outstanding work being delivered by teams and individuals across the scientific community, recognising their contribution to the chemical sciences industry or education. The Inspiration and Industry Award is given in recognition of an individual's or team's impact in promoting STEM careers amongst the local or national community.

Our ‘Science in a Box’ programme was created for students to learn more about medicine development, the role of the pharmaceutical industry and to demonstrate the range of career opportunities that exist in the pharmaceutical industry.

Designed and developed by a core team of Pfizer UK colleagues, the programme is available in primary and secondary school editions and is delivered in schools across the country by our trained STEM and SIP (Science Industry Partnership) Ambassadors.

Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, and ‘Science in a Box’ co-ordinator, Margaret Mortlock said - “Bringing medicines to market takes a long time, requires a diversity in expertise and people and costs a huge amount of money. Sharing that story with young people enables them to appreciate the complexity of the industry journey and visualise the fascinating roles available for them in the future.

The success of this programme is testament to the team of volunteers across 5 sites in Pfizer who developed and then delivered the programme at 116 events including 75 individual schools reaching 23,000 students – a huge achievement for a programme in its inaugural year. I am immensely proud of the team’s work and it has been an honour to co-ordinate this work.”

Winners are chosen jointly by independent expert panels from industry and the Education Division. Pfizer UK will be donating the cash prize of £2,000 to a worthy cause that supports the promotion of STEM subjects in school.

Congratulations to Margaret and the core ‘Science in a Box’ team – Don Clark, Rebecca Jackson, Sian Hills, Farzana Chaudry, Rohini Beavon and Pauline French – for this exciting achievement.
