Dr Katherine Barclay, Pfizer UK, appointed as board member for the Institute for Apprenticeships

On Friday 27th January 2017, the Institute of Apprenticeships set out its operational plan to support the government’s drive to deliver three million quality apprenticeships by 2020.1 Dr Katherine Barclay, Pfizer UK lead for academic liaison and chair of the Life Science and Industrial Sciences Apprenticeship Trailblazer has been appointed as a board member, alongside seven other business and education leaders.

“I am honoured to be part of this important step in delivering quality apprenticeships across industries. In the UK Life Science sector we need a highly skilled workforce and passionate young talent. Providing employer governance on the quality of apprenticeships will allow us to inspire and grow that new talent and, in turn, enable research and innovation to flourish,” commented Dr Katherine Barclay.

The Institute for Apprenticeships will lead on a number of reforms to improve the apprenticeship system and will provide advice to the government on funding.  By bringing together high calibre board members with varied experience, the Institute aims to ensure employers get the quality skills they need from the apprenticeship system.2

Pfizer recognises the importance of supporting young talent who have the potential to shape the future of our economy. Science and innovation in the UK is dependent on passionate and highly skilled individuals and Pfizer is committed to helping Britain inspire and develop its future leaders. Pfizer has worked closely with the UK government to develop the employer-led Apprentice Trailblazer scheme and we currently have over 35 apprentices at Advanced, Higher and Degree level working across Science, Manufacturing, Engineering, Business Administration and Human Resources in Pfizer UK sites.
