Science education: STEM and SIP Ambassadors

Inspiring the next generation of scientists

We believe it’s important that young people are engaged, inspired and enthused by science to ensure we grow the next generation of scientific talent.

STEM Ambassadors

In the UK, a number of Pfizer colleagues volunteer as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) ambassadors by visiting schools, attending science fairs and hosting students. The aim of the programme is to help bring STEM subjects to life and demonstrate their value in both life and as a career.

The efforts of our STEM ambassadors were recognised in 2014 when Pfizer was nominated for a STEMNET* Award and again in 2016 when they were awarded with a STEMNET* ‘Highly Commended’ Award for the Most Dedicated Employer.

For the 2016/17 academic year, our outreach grew substantially, reaching approximately 10,000 students from 38 schools and 5 universities via 73 outreach activities including:

  • Mini Big Bang Near U
  • STEMfest
  • Careers fairs
  • School science days
  • Guide and Scout jamborees

SIP Ambassadors

To further support the work of the STEM programme, some Pfizer colleagues have trained to become SIP (Science Industry Partnership) ambassadors. This network aims to combat the skills gap in the science industry, by nurturing home grown talent to build a globally competitive science based industry in the UK.

SIP ambassadors are industry professionals who share their knowledge and experience to inspire and enthuse young people into careers within science. They engage with young people, teachers, career advisors and parents to provide advice and guidance about the various opportunities available in pursuing a science based career.

I Am Science

To support the work of our SIP ambassadors we launched ‘I Am Science’ – a campaign designed to improve public understanding of our industry and to inspire future generations to pursue a science based career.

*Following a merger in 2016, STEMNET has now merged with STEM Learning and the organisation is now known as STEM Learning.  STEM Learning are working to achieve a world-leading education for all young people in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). The Network manages the STEM Ambassadors programme. STEM Learning continue to work very closely with Pfizer and support a number of dedicated Pfizer STEM Ambassadors, all supporting STEM education in schools and non-school groups.
